April and May Outreach

Congrats to Philharmonia Northwest for the completion of their 2012/2013 season!

We've had a great year for outreach events with PNW this year, and we're looking forward to even more events in our 2013/2014 season!

In April, the Mountlake Terrace High School Jazz Combo gave a fantastic Prelude concert to our jazz-themed season finale! Big thanks to Darin Faul and his students for an amazing performance!

In May, Philharmonia Northwest teamed up with Seattle Music Partners to bring a Side-by-Side rehearsal and performance opportunity to elementary school students in First Hill. PNW members, Seattle Music Partners, and students performed together in a casual concert for family and friends at Bailey Gatzert Elementary School. Big thanks to the staff and students for their help in making this wonderful event possible!

Overview

The Philharmonia Northwest is proud to announce our newest Community Outreach Initiative projects! We are very excited about these upcoming events and want to invite you and your students to get involved with the Philharmonia Northwest!

We have many programs designed for students of all ages, and look forward to introducing them to the wonderful music and musicians of the Philharmonia Northwest.

The Philharmonia Northwest’s signature program is “Side-by-Side,” which is an opportunity for highly talented young musicians in the Seattle-region to participate in rehearsals and concerts with the Philharmonia Northwest. Each player is paired with a Philharmonia Northwest stand partner who supports and guides young musicians during the rehearsal and concert process. This is a wonderful opportunity for young musicians to get a taste of the “real” musical world and forge important relationships with mentors and community musicians in the region.

In addition to this, Philharmonia Northwest invites young local ensembles to perform in our Prelude and Intermission concerts, which take place simultaneously with our concerts. Ensembles will have the opportunity to perform for Philharmonia Northwest audience members either before the concert or during intermission, and interact with community member before and after concerts. Students also receive free tickets to the concert!

Philharmonia Northwest also invites all school groups to attend our rehearsals. We are able to supply some music-based activity packs to teachers. Some students may draw their impressions of music during the concert or even supply short program notes, which will be shown in the lobby during our concerts!

Finally, Philharmonia Northwest can visit individual schools, providing outreach chamber music presentations and Q & A sessions for older music students looking to pursue a career as a musician.

We also invite educators to inform us of your ideas for the Philharmonia Northwest! We want to know what your needs are as educators and how the Philharmonia Northwest can help. Please feel free to contact philnweducation@gmail.com and we can work on creating a program specifically designed for your institution.

Julia Tai and the entire Philharmonia Northwest thank you for your interest in our programs. We look forward to working with you and your students in the future.

We are extending an invitation to all local school choirs to perform with us on our February 2nd concert at the University of Washington's Meany Hall! The school choir will be featured on the Prelude concert, which precedes the orchestra concert and takes place in the lobby of Meany Hall at 6:30. There is also the possibility of a performance by a smaller vocal group during the Intermission - please contact us for further information. Students will receive free tickets to the orchestra concert and a wonderful opportunity to perform in one of Seattle's most prestigious venues.

We are also extending an invitation to high-level string players under the age of 18 to participate in a side-by-side performance of Benjamin Britten's Simple Symphony on our March 10th concert at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church. This is a wonderful opportunity to learn from the talented musicians of the Philharmonia Northwest and to perform Britten's work for string orchestra.

Students chosen for this project must be able to attend all rehearsals, including the dress rehearsal. Rehearsals take place at North Seattle Community College from 7:15pm-9:45pm and will be held on February 12th, 19th, 26th, and March 5th. The dress rehearsal will take place the morning of March 9th.

Finally, we are inviting local school jazz bands to perform on our April 21st concert at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church. The jazz band will be featured on the Prelude concert, which precedes the orchestra concert and will take place at 2:30. There is also the possibility of a performance by a smaller ensemble during the Intermission - please contact us for further information. Students will receive free tickets to the orchestra concert and a wonderful opportunity to perform a great Seattle venue.
